PERIODONTAL DENTISTRY
Maintenance of the health of your gums is the bedrock of a healthy mouth. No matter how fancy is a crown put on your tooth, if that tooth is supported by unhealthy and diseased gums trouble is sure to follow. In our clinic we make sure that you will receive the proper gingivitis and periodontal treatment. If further surgical treatment is needed we offer referrals to dental specialties as required.
Gingivitis
Is a mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes inflammation of your gums. This will appear in your mouth as redness, swelling, painful and bleeding gums. Sometimes you may sense bad breath, receding gums or longer appearing teeth. Gingivitis can be treated with a simple cleaning and good oral health habits (brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups). You must take gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly because it can lead to much more serious gum disease (periodontitis) and eventually to tooth loss.
Periodontitis the next step
Is a more serious gum disease that involves not only the gums but also the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis can cause tooth loss but it can also increase the risk of heart attack or stroke and other serious health problems. It is the result of poor hygiene. Periodontitis is treated with a deep-cleaning method called scaling and root planning. With scaling the dentist will scrap off the tartar from above and below the gum line with the ultrasound machine and scaling tools. The root planning gets rid of rough spots on the root where the germs gather and helps remove bacteria that contribute to the disease. Sometimes laser will help reduce the bacteria of the sulcus. Medication may be used with treatments that include scaling and planning (antimicrobial mouthwash and antibiotics)
